Confused about the ELD Mandate?

In this article we go through the most commonly asked questions when it comes to the ELD mandate. Combining your preferred ELD and an iBOLT Mount, will help you comply with the FMCSA Electronic logging device regulation.

What is the ELD Mandate?

The ELD Mandate is intended to Improve road safety for Commercial Drivers by recording drive hours automatically to ensure drivers are not overextending themselves due to pressure from employers.

“The electronic logging device (ELD) rule – congressionally mandated as a part of MAP-21 – is intended to help create a safer work environment for drivers, and make it easier and faster to accurately track, manage, and share records of duty status (RODS) data. An ELD synchronizes with a vehicle engine to automatically record driving time, for easier, more accurate hours of service (HOS) recording.”- FMCSA

What does an ELD record?

The ELD synchronizes with the CMV engine to automatically record:

  • Engine power status
  • Vehicle motion status
  • Miles driven
  • Engine hours
  • Identification of driver/authorized user, vehicle, and motor carrier
  • Duty status

Who needs an ELD?

Starting December 16, 2019 in the US and June 12, 2021 in Canada, all carriers and drivers subject to the ELD rule must use ELDs.

The ELD rule applies to motor carriers and drivers who are currently required to keep records of duty service (RODS) under the hours-of-service (HOS) regulations. To view a full list of who is required to use an ELD, please visit the FMSCA Website here: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2015-12-16/pdf/2015-31336.pdf

Can truck drivers still use paper logs?

“The following drivers may keep paper RODS:

  • Drivers who keep RODS no more than 8 days during any 30-day period.
  • Driveaway-towaway drivers (transporting a vehicle for sale, lease, or repair), provided the vehicle driven is part of the shipment or the vehicle being transported is a motor home or recreational vehicle trailer.
  • Drivers of vehicles manufactured before model year 2000. However, a carrier can choose to use an ELD, even if it is not required.”-FMCSA

Is the ELD Mandate only for the US?

Currently the ELD mandate is only required within the United States and for commercial vehicles transporting goods into the United States. However, on June 12, 2021 Canada will be adapting this ELD rule to their transportation laws.

What is the best ELD device?

Any device can be used as an ELD device with an ELD application and engine recording model. Tablets and Smartphones are commonly used as ELD Devices and are required to mount the device in a position where the driver has access to and can view the device.

What is the easiest ELD to use?

Smartphones and Tablets are the easiest ELD devices to use due to the fact that we use these devices in our everyday life. Using these devices tend to be less expensive, are more intuitive to operate, and the easiest way to comply with the FMCSA ELD Regulations.
